HDC2450 - runs motor in one direction but not other was created by cadomanis
I have a HDC2450 that has been working without issue till a few days ago. Current issue is that the drive will run motor in the reverse direction without issue - currents all normal, running closed loop with nearly zero loop error. When I try to run in the forward direction, I get no motor movement, motor current goes to max output.
I am getting set up to try running on the other channel of the drive ( currently a spare) but wondering what could cause this type of problem?
Thanks,
Chuck

In open loop does the same thing occur? Does the feedback device show it is working with the controller?
If in open loop you have the same problem, then it sounds like something happened causing the channel to get damaged. In terms of your wiring, does it include protection from motor regen as described in both the datasheet and user manual?
Are you powered up via power supply or battery? If a power supply, is it a linear or switching supply? Switching supplies are known to give voltage spikes causing damage to the output stage.

Was the power ever removed while the motor was in operation?

I will test in open loop, but feedback device works fine in the reverse direction running closed loop so it seems unlikely.
I do have the high current diodes present as indicated in the datasheet drawings.
I am powered up via battery.
I will test open loop shortly to see if it is different.
Thanks

All the same in open loop. What would cause that damage? Why only one direction?
Thanks

Problem seems to exist on both channels. 2nd channel of drive has never been used till right now. Trying to run in open loop, run I reverse direction but not forward.
Thoughts?

Sounds like a possible motor regen damage (back EMF). Without a real idea of what happened leading up to the failure, it is hard to say.
The only thing that is not mentioned in the datasheet or the manual is that if the precharge resistor is not present in your wiring, then the diode has to connect directly to vmot, otherwise it is completely cut off in the event the contactor switch is cut.
Was the motor in operation at time of failure? Was the battery low at any point of time?

While I have the resistor in place, it seems to have gotten damaged and in not conducting - we are pulling it out for further testing. My question though is if I did have a regen even with the emergency switch off, is that 0.5W resistor really enough of a path to allow the regen current to flow back to the battery? It seems like a very small path?
Please advise.

The resistor is going to dissipate the current, but what you are trying block is the voltage spikes.

If the controller was bought in the last 90 days, it is covered under warranty. If not, then we do offer a flat rate repair fee.
