This would be typical of a problem with the serial adapter or a bad wiring. Check that your serial cable is OK. Try another adapter and/or PC.

I connected the controller to a virtual machine that recognizes the ports but when I try to update the firmware via COM port I get the message

Device starting string not detected.

and the update fails

Try installing the hyperterrm terminal emulator. It used to be part of windows. Now it is a 3rd party product that you cans download. If on Linux, you can use Minicom. Other terminal emulation programs should work too.

Then verify that you see "Starting ..." Being displayed when you power up. If not check and check again your wiring.

Then press and hold the "w" key as you power down and power up the controller.

You should then see the letter "C" be output every second. This will indicate you are in the firmware update mode.

Then, go to the send file menu. Select the YModem mode, select the firmware file .bin and send.

So I tried using minicom, set the port correctly, and accessed the controller (i can use the ?fid command to verify it). I begin pressing 'W' and then turn off the controller and turn it on again. When I turn it off, it alerts me that I have been disconnected and but when i turn it back on it show nothing.

When it turns off you get a message saying disconnected and nothing when you are connected (powered back on the controller). So with it on, and no response of being connected, does the message saying disconnected get displayed when the controller turns off this time?

Are you able to send it a command such as the ?fid and get a response back?

Yes, it does alert me again, when I disconnect it the second time and I can get the FID normally, but I don't see the Cs displayed

The #C that you normally see is just a command that is issued upon start up that clears the buffer history. You can also send it that command. Refer to Page 188 of user manual V1.3.
