Brushed Motor to Hold a Position

Hello.
I have used Roboteq controllers a great deal, over the years, for closed loop, position control of large brushed DC motors, for use in Special Effects in the Film and Television industry.
I am now looking to control similar brushed (or BLDC) motors in more of an open loop/push-pull/speed control application (as opposed to specific position control).
I have seen similar applications to ours, in which brushed motors are used without feedback, but in such a way that two motor working in position, will hold a load when no speed or direction input is applied.
Can RoboteQ controllers be set up, such that they will operate in this way?
Alternatively, if we were to provide encoder feedback, could the controller be set up such that it will actively hold/brake the load, when no speed or direction input is applied?
We are hoping to not require a mechanical brake, in this particular application.
Any additional support would be hugely appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
