Encoder Firmware update = BSOD (?) was created by sww
I was installing a new encoder board in an existing AX2550. I installed the board. I downloaded the latest Control software and both firmware packages (as of 4/7/2005).
I installed the RoboRun on a Windows XP laptop.
Plugged in the AX2550. Updated the firmware. It worked fine for the controller firmware.
Next I tried to update the encoder firmware. I select the encoder firmware and click on program. Click ok. Then I get Blue Screen of Death! The computer immediately resets before I can read anything on the screen. The last Roboteq window was: "Do not turn off power or the something bad will happen."
I reset the motor controller and was able to reconnect. I tried to update the encoder software again with exact same results.
Anyone else had this problem? I can not easily check another computer. The majority of our machines all run linux here. I will try to update the firmware with hyper terminal and see how that goes.

I am afraid the crash may have corrupted the encoder board's firmware. The controller is in a continuous loop spitting out:
If unplug the encoder, everything is ok.
RoboteQ v1.7a 02/07/05
{
RoboEnc v1.0 04/17/04
00
RoboteQ v1.7a 02/07/05
{
RoboEnc v1.0 04/17/04
03
If unplug the encoder, everything is ok.

Yeah! It works now!
Cosma thanks for the offer. I have been working on other stuff for the last couple of days and had not been able to get back to this problem.
For some reason, I can not upload encoder board firmware with the Roboteq software. I get a blue screen everytime.
I tried loading the firmware with Minicom under linux with no success, but was able to get it successfully upload with Hyperterminal. It took a few tries to get it successfully loaded.
