Serial Communication error with MATLAB

I have been trying to communicate to the AX3500 using MATLAB but the controller keeps sending \'?\' to the port. This problem is not there when I use Roborun Console for communication. I even tried to communicate using realterm with the given setting but again my screen is only flooded with \'?\'.
My controller is responding to the sent commands but I need to resolve the issue so that I can read the encoder data reliably.
