Can't get serial to work

I have a 2130 with can bus. Trying to hook it up via serial to a nvidia TX1. Usb works fine but no go on the serial. I tried a 3.3v to 5v level shifter and a 3.3v to 12v level shifter nothing back from the controller on either. The serial port works in fact the TX1 has 3 and I've tried all 3. They work with a terminal program and crossed tx rx so I don't understand why the controller won't send anything back. They are set for 8 bits 115200 baud rate. Default config on the 2130. I'd use usb but the manual says not too. So I'm stuck.

I found it finally. Another problem with the TX1. Doesn't set the uart type when it boots up so if you don't do it with setserial nothing happens.
