Motor Current Measurement details (SBL13xx)

5 years 2 months ago #29533513 by wbrownroboteq
I am driving a BLDC motor using an SBL13xx controller.

My question revolves around what "motor current" means in this context, and how it is measured by the controller.

Are the Motor Current values reported:
1) Instantaneous
2) RMS

And are they:
A) For 1-phase only
B) For all 3-phases combined

Finally, how does this controller measure the current.. .at the motor leads or using battery negative. The Controllers Uses Manual indicates that this detail is included in the individual datasheets, but I could not locate this information in the SBL13xx datasheet.

Thanks,
Will Brown

Currently on the SBL1360, the motor amps are estimated based on measured current draw from the battery and the PWM duty cycle of the motor ouput signal. We will soon be releasing a new revision of that board, the SBL1360A, which will measure the current at the motor leads. The value is meant to represent the peak current experienced on all 3 phases during commutation.
