Stall detection is designed to prevent current spikes on stalled motors that exceed the current rating of the motor. As a motor stalls and our controllers apply a higher PWM signal to it, the current draw becomes higher. More current in the motor means heat generated in the winding. Generally, a motor's max current rating is the maximum amount of current the motor can handle before it can't dissipate the heat in its windings. At higher currents, the heat in the motor builds up, and eventually the motor fails.
It is common for this condition to happen when a motor is stalled for some reason (e.g. drive train is jammed or wheel is caught). If stall detection is disabled, our controller will keep supplying current even if the there is no motion on the motor. If the max current our controller supplies is still under the Motor's maximum current rating this should not be an issue. If it is over the maximum current rating, we recommend using stall detection.
