Hi there,
I'm using an SBL2360 controller and would like to use closed-loop position control.
To do so, we are looking at a 13bit SSI encoder. From what I understand, roboteq seems to only support 12-bit SSI?
If a 13 bit SSI encoder is used, will roboteq just read the first 12 bits and drop the last? Or will the 13 bit encoder not work as an encoder at all.
Thanks!

I believe only a 12 bit encoder should work, however that is what most encoders should be. Can you post a link to the encoder datasheet?

Hi Gabriel,
Many thanks for your reply.
The encoder I intend to use is in the link below.
www.baumer.com/sg/en/product-overview/ro...d-50---hdmag/p/28105
This encoder has 13 bit as a minimum, and it has the most suitable form factor for our application so far.
Additionally, it seems like 13bit absolute encoders are common for an SSI interface.
"SSI Data is transferred in a single data word with the most significant bit (MSB) first. Rotary encoders normally use 13 bits of data for transmitting the angle within one revolution (singleturn). If the revolutions are also counted (multiturn), a 25 bit word is used."
Found in paragraph 4, page 6 of the document in this url:
www.posital.com/media/posital_media/docu...logy_SSI_AppNote.pdf
Thanks once again and do let me know if there is any way to make this controller work with a 13bit SSI encoder.
Alternatively, if you have any inexpensive <100USD 12-bit binary SSI absolute encoders to recommend, please do let me know as well.
Thank you
Sincerely
Arron Li

Hey Aron,
Just an update, I am asking or firmware engineer to clarify the resolutions we support in our SSI implementation. I will let you know when I have an update.

Hey Aaron,
I just got confirmation, that our SSI implementaiton should work for any number of bit resolution up to 16 bits. So all of these encoders should work.
