Teensy via RS485 speed control

Ok, im a complete newbie so bare with me. I would like to create a speed controller by sending a variable voltage to my teensy which would talk to my 1896 controller via RS485. I have no idea of the architecture involved for the 2 devices to talk to each other, any pointers or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
