I need to control a unidirectional motor (one direction only; never reverse direction).
How do I do that ?

If you only want your motor to move forward only, connect one of the motor terminals to the positive terminal of the main battery and the other to the Green wire of the controller.

With the unidirectional setup, is it necessary to connect the #8 red wires as well or only the green and black #8 wires?

Yes. It is needed for powering the controller and it is also a path for regen current to the battery.
