If you launch Roborun while the controller is configured in RC mode, it will be switching to RS232 mode temporarily (i.e. until next reset). All commands and data exchanged by the PC and the controller are in RS232.

we contemplated the idea of using a PDA on the robot side at one time. Roboserver is excessively simple, taking data from a TCP/IP socket and moving them, as-is on the serial port.

You will need to find a software development environment for the PDA that will give you access to its OS's network API.

However, the most serious challenge is that modern PDA practically never have RS232 ports. So the challenge is making the PDA communicate with the controller.

It's a wifi to serial adaptor unit. It seems like I would be able to use RoboRun over WiFi, and this device would put the bi-directional serial data right to your product. No on-board PC needed?
