Motor, Gearbox, Wheel Sizing

The Roboteq Calculator applies fundamental laws of physics to estimate the torque needed to drive your vehicle, based on a specified acceleration profile. You can adjust various parameters, including the vehicle's weight, desired acceleration, number of drive motors, inclination, and more. Ultimately, the calculator determines the required current for each wheel. This calculated value is essential for sizing the motor or motor drive in your application.
Important Note
Always include a margin for error in the calculated values, as not all system aspects can be accurately modeled.

Theory
The movement of an Automated Guided Vehicle is influenced by three key physical factors: inertia, rolling resistance, and gravitational force due to weight. Inertia, which is a property related to the AGV's mass, primarily impacts the vehicle during acceleration and deceleration. Rolling resistance arises from the deformation of the wheels and continuously opposes the AGV's movement. The gravitational force due to the AGV’s weight becomes a significant factor on inclined surfaces.
The equations to calculate the torque required to overcome the vehicle's rolling resistance, the traction torque needed for acceleration, and the gravitational torque necessary to counterbalance the vehicle's weight on inclined surfaces are as follows. The final required torque per wheel can be determined by summing these three torque values.

Brushless DC Motor Controllers
Servo Motor? Hub Motor? Inrunner or Outrunner? From a few Watts to 30kW, if your motor has permanent magnets and has 3 power wires, Roboteq has one or more controllers that will make it turn. Regardless of your motor’s size or channel configuration, just match the voltage and current rating using our Product Tables below, or use the Roboteq Product Finder.
